COMPETITION GUIDELINES – ARQUITECTURA FILM FESTIVAL SANTIAGO 2012
“THE CITY IS…….”
I.- DESCRIPTION
1.- The Arquitectura Film Festival Santiago (from now on “AFFS”) welcomes entries of audiovisual work whose theme is related to the city and the urban environment. For AFFS, “Films gives us a story and architecture gives us the context.”
2.- Audiovisual entries will be accepted for this competition between 1st December 2011 and 31st July 2012.
II. – GENERAL CONDITIONS OF ENTRY
1.- AFFS is an international competition open to individuals or groups of people over the age of 18, from any nationality. Audiovisual entries in short film format should be submitted, to either Fiction, Documentary, Animation or Experimental Film genres. Films last a maximum of 30 minutes, and must achieve the technical standards that allow for their viewing, as according to chapter IV in these guidelines.
2.- Entry to the competition is free.
3.- There is no limit on the number of short films that can be entered. Every entry must be entered separately, according to the following instructions in point 4 of chapter VII.
4.- Only films made between 1st January 2009 and 30th July 2012 will be accepted for submission (30th July 2012 being the final date for the film completion). The production date for the short film should be declared for each participating film, as in accordance with the information set out in chapter VII of these guidelines.
5.- Any audiovisual work that was made before the aforementioned opening date can be submitted as a sample, but will remain out of the competition. Again, they will only be considered if and when the technical standards allow for their viewing, as established in chapter IV of these guidelines.
III – ABOUT AUTHORSHIP AND VIEWING RIGHTS
1.- Participants must make a declaration that all works submitted are of their authorship and that the rights to show their work has not been assigned to third parties.
2.- Participants assume all responsibility for complaints or demands by any third parties, administrative, legal or any other bodies, in relation to the intellectual property rights of the work.
3.- Participation in the competition implies that AFFS receives all reproduction rights for the complete audiovisual work, within the framework of the Festival, and also for clips of the same work for use as promotional material or broadcasting of the festival by any relevant media. This does not imply that the author of the work loses any of their rights with respect to the work.
IV – SENDING IN WORK AND TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS
1.- The participant must send the work on a disk in DVD (video) or BluRay (video) format, and these are the only two formats to be accepted. Short films in VHS, MiniDVD, SVCD, Betacam or any digital files (Avi, Mov, Mpeg etc.) will not be accepted.
2.- The work sent must meet the minimum technical standards required in order for them to be reviewed and shown on screen.
3.- Every disk must be clearly labeled with the following information:
- Film Title
- Author’s Name
- Country of Origin
- Year of Production
4.- Short films will be accepted in any language, as long as they are subtitled in either Spanish and/or English. In the case of subtitling being required in Spanish, dialogue lists can be sent in either Spanish or English to AFFS. This preliminary service will be charged at $8 USD per minute of subtitling. V. MAILING AND OTHERS.
1.- If sending work from abroad, envelopes should be well sealed and should have the following phrase written clearly on them:
“PRODUCTO CULTURAL SIN VALOR COMERCIAL”

3.- Mailing costs will be covered by the participant.
4.- Copies will not be returned.
VI – SELECTION OF JUDGING PANEL AND GENRE CATEGORIES.
1.- A panel made up of different personalities from the world of arts and culture will deliberate on the work entered, and, on the last day of the festival, they will award the prizes as specified in point 3 of this chapter. The panel’s decision is final and not subject to appeal. AFFS reserve the right to declare void any prize category.
2.-Work sent will compete in one of the following categories, depending on its country of origin:
NATIONAL CATEGORY – For films made inChile.
INTERNATIONAL CATEGORY – For films made outside o fChile.
– The competition prizes are as follows:
- Best Fiction (National)
- Best Fiction (International)
- Best Documentary (National)
- Best Documentary (International)
- Best Animation (National)
- Best Animation (International)
- Best Experimental Film (National)
- Best Experimental Film (International)
4.- The film that receives the highest number of votes in its category will be declared as the winner (by a simple majority verdict of the panel).
5.- AFFS can authorize special mentions in the name of the organizers, and/or public prizes.
7.- Prizes will be awarded to the person whose name appears as the author of the work. The attendance of the film’s author at the festival is not a requirement in order for him / her to be awarded the prize.
VII – WORK SELECTION AND PARTICIPATION REGISTRATION
1.- Registration forms are available through AFFS’s official website (www.arqfilmfest.cl / submit a film) for each work submitted. When submitting work, the participant should fill in and send the registration form for all works submitted in order to obtain a registration number, which will be sent to the participant via e-mail. Completion of this form is mandatory and is considered a prerequisite for receipt of entry.
2.- Various entries may be submitted by each participant, but all work must be registered separately. Please note that work must be mailed separately as only one piece of work will be accepted per envelope received.
VIII – COMPETITION CALENDAR
1.- Publication date for the entry guidelines and FAQs will be 1st of December 2011.
2.-Registration date via online registration forms will be from 1st December 2011 until 31st July 2012 (closing date at 20.00 Chilean time / 17.00 GMT). In order to avoid any unforeseen inconvenience please assure that all registration of work is undertaken in good time.
3.- The deadline for receipt of envelopes will be 31st July 2012, 20.00pm Chilean time (17.00pm GMT).
4.- The receipt date for envelopes will be taken as the date when the envelope arrives at the competition address. Under no circumstances will the mailing date be considered as an alternative. It is recommended that international entries be sent in good time in order to avoid hold-ups or late arrival.
5.- Entries that are submitted without the relevant registration form, or which do not comply with these guidelines, will not be accepted.
6.- The publication date for work selected for the competition will be 1st October 2012 – this information will be published on the AFFS official website.

8.- AFFS are not responsible for Force Majeure events or Acts of God outside of the festival’s control, which might affect the carrying out of the festival and the showing of the short films received at the stated date above.
9.- The submission of work in itself implies that the author accepts these guidelines.
